Dental Fillings

For those unfamiliar with the process of getting dental fillings, the process can actually become a relief to those plagued with dental problems. With the latest advances in dentistry, the procedure has become much easier, more aesthetically pleasing and almost painless. Once our dentist discovers that the procedure is necessary, it is important to research the procedure.

Dental fillings are the process by which a dental professional fills a decaying tooth, hole or defect with a restoration material. This material can either be an alloy or composite product. Composite materials match the coloring of the tooth and are often used for aesthetic purposes when filling a visible tooth. Meanwhile, alloy fillings appear silver in color.

Currently, there are two types of restorations utilized for dental fillings. Direct fillings are applied immediately to the prepared tooth and are most often applied in one visit. However, indirect fillings usually take more time since the tooth is prepared, cleaned and then an impression is taken of the tooth. This impression is then sent away for a restoration to be developed. The filling is then applied to the prepared tooth once the restoration is completed.

Regardless of which typ of dental fillings is required, the process of applying a filling is a relatively simple process. In fact, the procedure can be practically painless for those patients with a small portion of decay. However, local anesthetics are used to eliminate pain for the patients with a larger amount of decay. During the procedure, the decaying portion of the tooth is removed. Next, the tooth is cleaned thoroughly. Then, the removed decay is replaced with the necessary restorative material.

The patient is usually advised to refrain from eating for at least two hours after the procedure is completed. However, the amount of time is usually increased if anesthesia is necessary because of its numbing effects. It is usually possible to eat around thirty minutes after the anesthesia has completely worn off.

Since there are several options with this dental treatment, it is important for the patient to develop a comfort level with our dentist. There are many questions that our dentist could answer to help alleviate some concerns about the procedure. Once research and clarification of the subject is complete, it is clear how easy and advantageous the process of having a tooth filled really is.

A+ Experience

The dentist was very kind + caring. Highly recommend! I only had a few days left on my dental insurance + she helped to prioritize my care + fit me in so that I could get issues taken care of in a pinch. The office manager, couldn't have been sweeter + she helped me to understand the sometimes tricky insurance pieces + actual prices I'd be paying before I made any decisions. A+ experience.
