EMERGENCY ROOT CANAL

Most cavities do not develop overnight. These dental lesions typically develop over the course of weeks or months, and rarely cause symptoms until they are at an advanced stage of decay. Unfortunately, by the time they reach an advanced stage, they can result in extreme pain, causing a toothache that throbs and extends deep into the jaw. If you have a severe toothache, you may need an emergency root canal.

Candidates for Root Canals

A cavity is just one of the reasons you may need a root canal. Our dentist may also recommend an emergency root canal if you have:

  • An abscessed tooth
  • A dead tooth
  • An inflamed nerve
  • A knocked-out tooth that has been re-implanted
  • A severely damaged tooth

We may recommend a root canal treatment to address other issues, as well.

The Process

Although root canals have gotten a bad reputation over the years, they are virtually painless procedures, used to save teeth that would otherwise be lost. To begin your emergency root canal procedure, our dentist will numb your tooth and surrounding tissues using a local anesthetic. We use a special dam to isolate the tooth and keep it clean during the process. Our dentist uses tools to access the inner soft tissues of the tooth. These tissues, which include the nerve, the blood vessels, and the pulp, are removed. The canals of the tooth are then cleaned, reshaped, and filled with a material called gutta percha, which fills the area and prevents infection from reoccurring. The tooth is then topped with a crown to restore structure and strength.

Recovering

Most patients will experience dramatic pain relief after a root canal. If you had significant infection or inflammation, you may have some lingering tenderness, but anti-inflammatory or over-the-counter pain medications should help you manage the discomfort. We may prescribe an antibiotic to combat any remaining bacteria and promote healing.

Once the tooth has fully healed, it will need to be restored. This is typically done using a porcelain crown, which covers the visible part of the tooth and restores its strength and appearance. Call our office today to schedule your emergency root canal.

A+ Experience

The dentist was very kind + caring. Highly recommend! I only had a few days left on my dental insurance + she helped to prioritize my care + fit me in so that I could get issues taken care of in a pinch. The office manager, couldn't have been sweeter + she helped me to understand the sometimes tricky insurance pieces + actual prices I'd be paying before I made any decisions. A+ experience.
